The phenomenon

What is the Mandela Effect?

The Mandela Effect describes a situation where many people confidently remember the same detail differently from the documented record. The term became popular after people discussed remembering Nelson Mandela dying in prison during the 1980s, although he was released, became South Africa’s president, and died in 2013.

Shared false memories do not mean people are lying. Memory is reconstructive: our brains rebuild past experiences using fragments, expectations, repetition, and information learned later. That makes familiar names, quotations, and images especially interesting to test.
